2 row radiator for 3.0?

Is there anywhere that I can get a bigger radiator for my 3.0? The puny little radiator in there now didn't do well last summer in California when the temps were in the triple digits. It did fine as long as you were moving, but when you stopped, the gauge got uncomfortably high, but didn't actually overheat. Even at speed, I think the thermostat was fully open as the temperature seemed to be above where it normally is. There should be more margin in the cooling system. My '95 4.0 4WD never had a problem under the same conditions.

I tried to fit a 4.0 radiator in there (you'll need the shorter 4.0 shroud, too), but the inlet on the tank is angled downward. This makes the upper radiator hose nearly ride on the alternator pulley. What I need is the 2 row core of the 4.0 with the side tanks for the 3.0. I have not seen a 2 row radiator for the 3.0 at all of the usual parts stores. Any suggestions?

How old is the coolant? Thermostat? Water Pump? Hoses? Temp Sensor?

Before I would start screaming radiator, I would first look at the things I mentioned above.

The only place I really know where you could get a bigger radiator would be here:

http://www.midwestsho.com/catalog/pr...roducts_id/270

It is for the Taurus, but it might fit in the Aero with an electric fan.

fan clutch?

when you sit still you hardly use the capacity of your rad
however your airflow over the core is dependant only on the fan
even idle speed can affect this (too low = low airflow)
the core could oxidized both internally as well as externally insulating it from the cooling air
if the rad is over 5 years old it is probably oxidized externally

is the core of the rad silver/gray or is it black and crappy?

I already did the coolant and thermostat before I noticed the apparent lack of cooling. I change coolant and thermostats every two years or less, depending on what type of maintenance/repair I have to do in between. The water pump and temp sensor are original ('97) as far as I can tell (I bought the van a year ago). The van only has 56k on it, hoses are decent (the lower one doesn't collapse). There is evidence of slight seam leakage on the radiator. I was going to replace the radiator but if I could get a bigger one, I would. I don't want to replace a radiator of marginal capacity with a newer one with marginal capacity. I don't want to do this job twice. I might tow a boat, so I was hoping to have a bigger radiator, not to mention it would be nice to have some peace of mind knowing that there is margin in the cooling system.

Try the radiator from an Explorer. If my memory is any good, the upper nipple goes straight out in an Explorer. Anyway, I have the 4.0L Aerostar radiator with the upper nipple angled downward, and it fits fine for me.

how old is fan fluid coupler? should be changed every 50k or 5years...any fan blade damage? any shroud damage? all are critical for proper idle rpm cooling

first...run a 1/4 cup of liquid dish soap in cooling system and reverse flush with hose thru thermostat opening...may solve the problem....may be engine cooling passages are coated with slime or partially plugged....
when changing radiator....put in a new water pump..especially if original...may be damaged impeller...easy to do with radiator out..
also look at V6 Ranger PU radiator for size u need.

4.0 radiator in 3.0

OK, I'm not giving up on this yet. With cool weather 10 months out of the year and only warm weather when hot, I've been able to postpone this. I just thought of something that I should have done but didn't when I did the fit check. Anyway, this question is directed primarily at copper, but if anyone else has put a 4.0 radiator in the 3.0, chime in. Did you use the upper radiator hose from the 4.0 when you put the 4.0 radiator in your 3.0 Aerostar? I realize now that I should have tried it and probably would have avoided the interference between the upper hose and the alternator pulley. Now that I don't have the parts in hand, I don't know how I'll run a fit check again without spending more than I want.

No, I used the 3.0L upper hose. They do sell these flex hoses that can be bent to fit.

If all else fails, why not use a flex hose? If your outlets are 1.5 inches, I can give you a number to try at Advance Auto.

This is a stupid question....but I gotta ask. Where did you get your radiator? There are Aerostar radiators on ebay that cost about $50 delivered to your door. I just bought a Modine today from NAPA for my '96 and it cost about $270, with taxes. O'reilly and Autozone had theirs for $200. If I had all the money in the world, I'd buy one of each and compare them all side by side by cutting all of them open. Before everybody says that I got shafted, remember that a radiator is no place to compromise, especially with the 4.0 Aerostar. Who know? Maybe I just overpaid by $220.

Also, your fan clutch is okay? Belt tensioner is tight enough to spin the fan fast enough? Good belts? Radiator/external tranny oil cooler/AC condenser are all clean? Lots of things can cause problems.

I did the fit check on my '97 3.0 using the radiator from my totaled '95 4.0 4WD so I didn't have to spend any cash. I thought that I might as well try to salvage something from the '95 before I sent it off to the crusher. If I get motivated enough, I'll try to do the swap in the local U-Pull-It yard if the parts are still in the vans in the yard. Otherwise, I'll scrounge around for a cheap ($10) scrap 4.0 radiator, shroud and upper hose and try the swap again.

I buy my radiators from a local radiator shop called AAA Radiator in Redmond, WA. I've bought two from them (one for my Ranger and one for my Aerostar) and their price was substantially lower than the major auto parts houses (Schucks, Pep Boys, etc.). The 4.0 radiator (Modine) for my '95 Aerostar was $195 before tax. The one for Ranger was about $140 before tax. There's another radiator shop in Everett, WA that has prices that are similar. I bought a radiator from them for my Escort.
