at high speeds, or when backing. Added trans fluid....one quart, but still heard the sound when backing down low boy trailer. I haven't checked the rear end for lube, yet.
1984 F150 Supercab....C6 with 40,000 miles on rebuild.
I started to post to this forum instead of 80-86 Ford trucks....
anywho, took her in this 7AM and my mech called to say the lube looks like tar, flushing and refilling may be the answer....will let you know when complete.
A whine is a sign of bad gears or bearings in the axle. You may have a bad bearing which is causing the ring gear and pinion gear not to mess correctly and when this happens the gears will whine.
I would ask who ever is changing the fluid to inspect the bearings for excessive play. Most of the time you can just grab the pinion and it will tell you all you need to know.
Don't think simple fully describes the process......mech said the lube looked like a 'tar ball'....thick and difficult to remove and clean out. How difficult? $218 difficult....think I was surprised?
