If you didn't get tires yet, check out Pro Comp All Terrain tires. They have a true 50,000 mile treadwear warranty and are 50 state legal for use WITHOUT chains even when mandated by federal highway agenices during severe weather. They ride quiet, don't slip in wet or icy weather and have a great load rating for towing. They are by far the best tires I have EVER owned.
If you want a tire that is not as agressive as the Pro comps then you could check out the Cooper Discoverer H/T. Nice quiet ride, 60,000 mile tire, good traction in rain and snow, plus they look good. Or Go to a Bridgestone REVO. These tires get excellent reviews and look awesome! There are several people here that have them on thier trucks.
I baught a set of Goodyear Wrangler GS-A tires for me '99 expy. Absolutely great tires for it. They are a bit more aggresive than the factory Wranglers but they make no extra road noise at all. I can punch it in the snow and the thing just hooks without any slip. I will likely buy the same tires again when these ware out.
I put Michelin LTX on my 2000 Navigator---what a huge difference in ride compared to the stock Continentals---I highly recommend them---and that's in the snow in WI
i bought some yokohama geolander hts's for the expo and they give me a great ride and are priced reasonably. i found some good reviews before i bought. i just bought another set for the wifes truck too. i am sick of firestone, goodyear and bfg as they either got recalled or just wore like crap (gy and bfg).
Another vote for the Pro-Comps! I agree, they are the best tires I've ever had on any vehicle (purpose tires, that is).
If you need the A/T characteristics, they are definately the way to go, and 4-Wheel parts is always having a sale of some sort. I got mine "Buy 3 get 1 free" which made them cheaper than any others in that catagory by far. And the no questions asked road-hazard and tread warranty can't be touched by other tire brands.
Yoko's are good too, but a little pricey. A friend of mine has the Geolander Mud Terrain on his Cheby and they have lasted a lot longer than I thought they would.
If you just want a street tire, Kuhmo's are the best on the road right now. Their technology and the inexpensive price make them unbeatable.
Oh man, tires...ahhhhh!!!! Let me tell you a story (yes, there is a tire recommendation at the end of the story ).
A few weeks ago I took my Expedition to the dealer and was told I needed new tires. They recommended the Continental Contitrac since it was on sale and the current standard equipment with new Expy's. So being an idiot I said "Yeah man! put those babies on for me". That same night after 30 minutes of driving home I HATED them. First thing the next morning went down and was told "Sorry, you drove them...nothing we can do." This was from my Ford Dealer. Keep in mind I fully admitted to being responsible and offered to pay all the labor and a restocking fee if required....didn't get a single penny.
Gave them another couple days and couldn't stand the ride compared to my original Wrangler HP's. Decided to eat the price and scrap the blasted Contitracs and ordered a set of Wrangler Silent Armors from a Goodyear dealer. I LOVE these tires..smooth solid and controlled ride, no complaints what so ever and HIGHLY recommend them.
In my opinion you can't go wrong with the Wrangler Silent Armor, but whatever you do DON'T GET THE CONTINENTAL CONTITRAC!!!
Give Kelly Springfield tires a try. They offer quite a few tires designed and aimed specifically at the SUV market and in all requirement levels from quiet luxury to severe mud. I have the Safari AWR on my Expy and will never buy another tire as long as Kelly continues to make it. I had them on my 94 Bronco and as soon as the stock Wranglers wore out on my 02 Expy, I put a set of the Safari AWR's on. Never looked back! http://www.kelly-springfield.com
