the rear axle uses 75w90 full synthetic oil, never add a non synthetic oil. the fuel filter at 30k is not overkill. dueto the filter being able to filter down to 3 microns it does get clogged and will lead to poor mpgs and lack of power. don't think you have clean gas either. most gas stations only filter to 40 microns.
Normally if a gas filter gets clogged the engine will STOP because of no gas getting to it. Either gas is getting to the engine or it is not...

Even if the gas filter is partially clogged the engine is still taking what it needs to run, not any more or less...only if it is completely clogged and no fuel can go through the filter, then it becomes a problem...
I remember older Fords back in the 60's and 70's where the filter would become completely clogged up and the engine would stop, usually this would happen in the middle of the Lincoln Tunnel, seen it happen...
I think the new filter design today prevents this from happening...

I had a truck in the 70's that was bad about going through filters and when the filter started clogging, it acted like a speed limiter. 60mph was the max before cutting out. The next day, 55mph was the max. It had an electric fuel pump and everything else was mechanical back then.
Nowdays with your chip, electronics and sensors...I wouldn't doubt that it could instead start messing with your mpgs before choking. It's "smart" so it might try to compensate for the lack of fuel.
Just looking at the scheduled maint. guide for my newly acquired 04 Escape XLT V6 and it says at 30,000 intervals change the fluid in the 4R100 trans and merely check the fluid level in the other models until 150,000. Has anyone had any issues with these units?

I haven't had any issue with mine (85k on my 02 before totaled and 30k on my 05), but the transmission is a CD4E. Do an internet search and you'll see it's been in use since 1994 on the Mazda. I would consider the CD4E the weakest link on the vehicle though some aggressive maintenance on the tranny should make it last (I did buy a second Escape). Several TSBs have been issued over the years and notice in your manual that Ford even goes as far as saying use plain Mercon ONLY.
Thanks bananaboat. Good to know. This is my first Escape. I've had 3 Explorers for a total of about 300,000 miles so I'm much more familiar with those. That's why I'm here though....to learn.
yes fuel will still get to it but not in the correct amount. the engine management system will start compensating for a lean condition and retard timing. run a modern engine to long and you will burn valves,cats or foul out the oxygen sensor. also with bad flow leads to bad pressure so the fuel injectors are not atomizing the fuel in the correct fashion.
