I am assuming that the engine is popping???
That is usually the sign of an ignition problem. A bad plug, wire, dist. cap, rotor. Does it still have points or electronic ignition. It could also be a lean condition from a partially clogged fuel filter or a weak fuel pump.
Check the firing order on the distributor, make sure it matches the firing order on the top of your intake manifold. refer to my gallery for 302 cid firing order. https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...=94128&width=0
Recheck your timing, using a timing gun. Make sure to plug vacuum line at the distributor prior to setting your timing and verify that the no vacuum is present at the vacuum line will engine is running. After setting base timing, re-plug in vacuum line at the distributor housing with the engine off.
Pop off distributor cap and check for cracks on cap and check the metal probes on the bottom of cap for wear or breakages. Check rotor for wear or burn marks, Replace parts if necessary.
Check all vacuum lines for leaks, cracks, or loose connections.
Ask your dad if he lined up the timing gear marks when he replaced the timing chain.
Not to be too big of a jerk, but it sounds retarded doesn't it? But seriously....These guys are telling you to check the timing and that is an ok thing to do. However, you indicated that you have a point ignition. Well, you need to set the dwell before you mess with the timing. Dwell effects timing but timing doesn't effect dwell. Your dwell on the V-8 should be between 28-32 degrees. Once you have that, set your timing. Do this by unpugging the distributor vac port and put a plug in it. Set the engine RPM to about 900 RPMs and you should time this guy at about 4-6 degress before TDC for starters. You may even be able to get away with 7-10 degrees before TDC if you're lucky. Plug the vac line back in. Also, I really doubt your father put your timing gear on wrong, especially if it is a factory one. It doesn't go together very easy the wrong way.
T.R.Bauer, Just state the facts with out the name calling, it makes for a more enjoyable forum. Good point on checking the point dwell. A Timing chain and gears can be installed mis aligned.
