How about sparkplug wire cross firing on 7 & 8 ?

your carb may be the culprit. something with the needles or float. it could be putting in too much fuel when you punch and the excess fuel not being burned is being pushed into the exhaust manifolds or headers and burning up in there and popping something horrible. my 78 Bronco was doing the same thing. the float was being filled up too fast even on idle and backfired every 6 seconds. woke up the whole block that way, they arent too happy with me but oh well, my new truck is worse, 78 F150 with straight stacks off of headers. i hope i didnt repeat someones reply and i hoped i helped out. -Coyote-

I guess I need to be really careful about what I say...aparently there is no room for humor in this thread. I didn't call anyone any name what-so-ever. The retarded comment was tongue and cheek in reponse to the timing being retarded. If anyone took it the wrong way I am sorry about that. Didn't mean any harm at all. Have a good one.

Check basic cam timing then ingnition dwell,timing try a different condensor then check engine vacum should be 20 in.hg. +- and steady check float level and remember everything that happened yesterday as far as who did what means nothing til you fix the problem good hunting

If all of the above items check out. Then give the engine a compression test, it could be that there is a bent pushrod or a flat cam lobe.
