I am looking into having the transfer case in my 1977 Ranger rebuilt or doing the work myself. My questions are these: 1) Is this something a person can do himself because the shops want close to 1000 to rebuild mine. 2) I lost a gear inside I believe and perhaps bent the fork do these things require a total rebuild or can we just fix the broken parts? Any help I would GREATLY appreciate. Oh by the way it has a part time kit in it also so I would have to do the work on that too.
A transfer case is similar to a manual transmission when it comes to rebuilding it.It can bit a bit pricey because they consist of basically all "hard parts" (parts not intended to wear or self sacrafice. Take for example, in an auto tranny you replace the clutchs and bands when you rebuild it, they are soft parts (parts intended to wear). Hard parts are expensive usually, so like i said, it may cost a good bit. If I'm not mistaken the NP203 is a chain driven, full-time 4 wheel drive tranny. If this is the case, the more practical thing to do is buy an NP205 from a junkyard and intall manual locking hubs. This will increase gas mileage and give you the option of 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive. GOOD LUCK!
I am leaning that way myself. What am I looking at in order to change out parts ie. are the drive shafts going to be different or do I need a different cross member? I am already one step ahead I have the locking hubs because my np203 had a part time kit in it. rear drive shaft is a one piece would it be better to change to a two? How about the shifter and mounting? I really appreciate you guys letting me pick your brains.:7
If its a married transfer case, you probably need the connector housing from the tranny to the transfer case. The driveshaft should come out about the same length. If you find a junkyard with a complete truck, you can compare what they have to what you have. The shifter is all self contained on the t-case, so that shouldn't matter.
Ok I found a donor NP205 and a drive line from our local junkyard. I have a line on the cross member that mounts the 205. Other than that is there anything I will need? How about a different adapter for the 205 to mount to the C6 or will the have the same bolt pattern? Is the output spline going to be any different by how it mates the in input of the 205 instead of the 203?
