Actually, the overheating problem did not go away until I installed the coverplate. I did make certain to bleed all air out of the system so there were never any pockets. It would be my guess that because the new motor is tight (therefore running slightly hotter), without the coverplate the vanes on the pump could not build enough pressure to circulate coolant with such a big cavity and possibly even cause cavitations resulting in insufficient flow and overheating problems. I noticed that without a thermostat and coverplate, I did not see the coolant circulate through the radiator. Once the coverplate was installed, there was so much flow that the coolant splashed out without the cap on.
Anyway, thanks to all who responded and tried to help, I really appreciate it!
Especially RON_29_1973 I think you got it right! My wife's business is back on the road and we are relieved and happy!
i got a problem with my cooling as well. i dont mean to hijack your thread but it is kinda the samething. i got a 79 460 and i have replaced every cooling part except the fan and fan clutch and both seem to be working fine. the problem is while im at hiway speeds it stays nice and cooled, but will spike from time to time. if i hit the brakes it shoots up in temp, or if im doing about 20 to 30 mph it gets hot, but while im sitting at a light or a stop sign it cools itself back down. any help would be great
hey prometheius where did you happen to find the backing plate at i found some at Jegs and Summit. I did not remember there being a plate on there when i replaced the water pump, and im running out of things to replace to get my cooling back to normal. thanks
i have the same problem what is the coverplate your talkin bout? if im thinkin right its a gasket/spacer behind the waterpump. do i need to remove t or put one in? thanks a ton
The water pump on the 460 should have a flat steel plate or spacer if you want to call it that. I failed to install this one time and had a major coolant leak.
The plates are sold on ebay and not that it matters now but I worked for a stamping company that makes these plates. The die even begins with the C8 part number. Not sure if they run the die any more. I did grab a few plates for spares for myself.
