I just got a 2002 with 2800 miles, and found out about the gasket problem after I got the truck and am a bit spooked. When did they fix it or did they?
Are 4.2's a bit noisy when you first start them up? What are "normal" sounds from them, if any?
thanks
The lower intake gasket issue was suppose to be resolved on 4.2V6 engines built after the date 1/15/98.The timing cover gasket issue was suppose to be resolved after 5/97.I have yet to see a 4.2V6 fail from a bad head gasket installed from the factory.I think they learned there lesson on those from the 3.8V6. Welcome to the 4.2 club!
Hey brm,
Like BOF said - Welcome to FTE!
Also like BOF said, the premature gasket failures were addressed long before your truck rolled off the line.
My 2000 did have the lower intake manifold gasket leak at about 155,000 miles. I got it fixed and kept on driving it until I sold it at about 170,000.
Your 2002 only has 2,800 miles !? or did you mean 28,000 ?
Doesn't really matter. Either way, it should have many good miles ahead of it.
It was a 2002 F 150 Sport shortbox with 2800 on it. Isn't loaded out but has the a/c which I think they all had, Ford bedliner, and running boards, rubber mat instead of carpet, auto, no cruise. Got it for $8900. Still smelled new inside. Did Ford correct the problem in such a way if the lower intake gasket does fail, it won't flood the engine with coolant?
There was a receipt from an oil change shop in the owners manual jacket, and I noticed they put 7 quarts in, and the manual calls for six. Got me to wondering if the dip stick might not show full at 6 quarts. I'll change it again when it stops raining.
Some folks fill until the dipstick reads 100%. This is not really necessary.
No harm at his time buy using 7 (at least none I'm aware of).
Ford's designed fill amount is 6 qts.
You can go back to 6 when you change it yourself.
I know of no changes to any internals. By definition gaskets keep things from going where they are not designed or wanted to be. SO, if your gasket ever fails, it can cause probs. But, that is true for most every car or truck on the road today.
