Worn u-joint in steering

Hey fellas. My question is a have bought a new u-joint to replace the worn out unit. The top side unbolts from the shaft out of the wheel. But what do I do for the removal of the shaft from the bottom that gos into the pump? I have had it in a vise and tried to genlty hammer it loose, but I am afraid of damaging the splines on the shaft which will be reused. Should I be heating with a torch? Or am I missing something really simple here? I figure it is just rusted on tight. In the picture I posted it would be on the right side. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Blair

Do you have PS in your '78? Are you referring to the "rag joint" as "U-joint?" - the flexible piece of rubber....there are some posts you have to remove (safety posts) in order to get the bottom piece apart. Some members here have stated that they simply unbolt off. Mine were not threaded in (orinially) on my '79. I took a grinder and ground off the back sides and punched the post out. I hope this helps if this is your application
