Transmission Code U= 4R70W or 4R100?

My girlfriends dad is curious about which transmission he has. He wants to change the fluid and is unsure how much fluid to add and all that. He is also concerned about durability of the tranny. Truck is a 2000 model with the 5.4 and 4WD. Thanks for the help in advance!

U - 4R70W, should take around 13.5 to 14 quarts with a torque converter drain, around 6-8 qts without. Fill and check as you go. The fluid is MERCON V, not Mercon. Mercon will not work properly and may cause transmission failure.

The transmission is highly durable with problems of earlier AOD's and AOD-E's being worked out as time has progressed. I wouldn't try neutral drops daily with it, but it'll hold it's own with proper maintenance.

Thanks for the quick response. I have a 95 with the E4OD and the tranny code is E. I figured U was the 4R70W tranny. Hes debating on if he could pull a trailer with a GEHL skid loader. The skid loader is pretty friggin big. Should he buy an older F-250 to pull this or will the truck hold its own?

What the weight of the skid? What is his rear ratio?
Check the specs page out under trailer weight... there's a few more things that go into towing a trailer than just weight though, they give you the max, but you have to subtract other weights, like bed payload, people, tools, options...

Here's the link to the specs page https://www.ford-trucks.com/specs/2000_f150_1.html

I've got a 2000 F150 7700 4x4 (I'm the 3.73 for 8300lb max on that page)

I do know is has the 3.55 rear end. The weight of the loader is roughly 7800 lbs without the bucket and forks.

What does a heavy duty tow package have to do with it...

I'd say no... unless it's a short trip and only done occasionally... iy's way to close the max as it is. That max only means the truck is completely empty (I mean empty).

Yes, it also came with a 7700 badge on the tailgate. The 3.73 was only found in a 7700 (or Lightning) from the factory.

Very sure... the 3.73 was only offered on the 7700 from 2000-2004(Heritage), the Lightning also had it from 2001-2004... both had one key element, the 10.25" Visteon (Sterling) rear... not a 9.75." The 3.73 is available in the aftermarket for a 9.75, but not on a fatory equipped truck. Unfortunately I cannot find the specific rear ratios for 2000-2001... they should be 3.08, 3.31, 3.55 for 8.8", 3.31 & 3.55 for 9.75", 3.73 for 10.25". Look at our spec pages or take a browse through www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas/ under the Body Builders Layout Book.
There you'll see many of the options only found on the 7700, that gear ratio was actually one of them. I have found them very useful for all the technical data about Ford trucks .

He's got the 3.55 rear end so scratch that out. He decided not to tow that thing with it. We're going to look at an 89 f-250 with the 351 and ZF manual 5 speed. I told him he was better off with that thing...... that ZF is a good tranny.

I'd like to modify the above statement about the Lightning... the 9.75" rear did come in those with the 3.73s from '01-'04. Also the S/C Harleys, I consider those SVT trucks ala Lightning, had the 3.73s.

No other F150s of the '00-'04 Heritage era had the 3.73 gear sets.

the F150 probably has a greater GCVW than the F250.

It probably is only ~ 12000-13000lb.

My '85 F250, C6, 351W, and 4.11s was rated lower than my '00 F150.
