93 Van - Misses while accelerating
Had been stalling at Idle - so replaced Distibutor Cap (one nipple was greenish and corroded - the rest were pristine....) and the rotor, spark plugs, and one plug wire - the one on the corroded nipple.
Didn't fix idle problem but seemed time (30K since last tune-up).
Another forum suggested the Idle Air Controller - and this fixed stalling at idle.
No mean feat to replace without Dental tools (heh heh).
Idled for 15 minutes no problem.
Took for test spin, and immediately noticed hesitation above 10-15 MPH, under load or not.
Hesitation stayed even above 45-50 MPH.
Shood fess up and add that the transmission has been slipping when starting from a dead stop - and occasionally within 100 feet of accelerating from a dead stop.
No check engine light.
Don't have a code reader (in case a less serious code is logged).
Lots of possibilities now - Throttle position sensor - Torque converter - maybe fuel pump.
Any idea how to narrow this down?
Might be time to trade up.....
Thanks in advance!
I only replaced one wire. The rest looked fine.
Might do a night time visual and check for sparks etc.
A nearby garage says they do a test where they spray a mist over the
Distribitor cap and coil etc.
Not sure this is a good idea, but it might be worth a try.
Odd that it idles great but hesitates while driving.
Of course it was the hardest one to get to, and of course I busted a small orange very brittle vacuum hose while doing it.
Of course I had to pull the alternator to get at the vacuum hose to splice a rubber cable over it - thanks to the sage advice of the bumper to bumper guy....
The sparkplug was easy with the alternator removed - but of course they sold me the wrong one - back to the store....
Everyhing is up and running.
The 20 minute job took 4 1/2 hours - with drive time to the auto store....
Also found that when rerouting the sparkplug wires through the wiring harness, care should be taken to keep wires on sequential terminal posts (on the distributor cap) apart.
