I have an hewitt/packard computer that is about 5 years old. I want to put in another memory stick. I see that more than one stick can be put in there, but am I supposed to remove the old one, or do I need to keep it in there.
Memory is cheap- especially the vintage you need. I'd recommend that you just buy two new "matched" sticks of memory to give you the desired upgrade.
If money is really tight, you can try to keep the old one and just buy a single new stick. Depending on how the system was manufactured, that may not be possible. But its worth a try.
i have allways just put in as much as the bank will hold. some people say that they need matched pairs, but these are usually the people selling the stuff to ya. just cram in as much as you can, you will notice a big difference though.
You only really need "matched" if you're running dual channel and 5yrs ago your system wasn't designed with dual channel. Keep them both in there, your system will be happier. $80 sounds good if it's 512mb other wise he payed too much. Good Luck

Well, I'd have to say "maybe". I've done a lot of PC support for a large company and have seen more than one occassion where mis-matched DIMMs caused stability problems. It may not be as big of a deal today- or in a home environment- but I still think it's best to match them. Of course, if they work together, then that's great!
