I've been told that the NP 205 transfer case is usually unbreakable and I the 3208 gobs of torque and Dave Sponaugle said the cat that was in the 80 somthing F-250 kept blowing transfer cases, so would the 205 hold up to the beast or would a divorced rockwell transfer case need to be fitted along with rockwell axles? How much smaller is one of Cats smaller straight sixs compared to the 3208?
You can certainly find out whay you can buy a rebuilt one for along with ALL the other types of engines out there.
The 3116 might be an alternative.

3116 would be the easiest as far as a Cat goes. I've heard they dont have the best track record, unless it's totally stock hp. Does it have to be a Cat? I know Cummins 6BT was mentioned, but if you want something different(yet swappable), look into Perkins(6.354), IH(DT360 may possibly fit but stil really big & heavy), or even J. Deere.
Those Cat's are going to cost a fortune also......
I don't think you can beat a Cummins mainly because there's a zillion Dodge pickups on the road from about 1989 up with the 6BT installed. Just about all the wrecking yards have several sitting on the shelf, and you can do an "insurance buy" and get a totaled one for fairly cheap. Also Cummins has kits you can buy so you can put a 6BT into just about ANY pickup Ford/GM/Dodge/IH on th eroad.
The 6BT will bolt up to a great many transmissions and I suppose Advance Adapters sells kits for all the ones that don't match.
A 3116/3126 would be very cool and unique but probably after it was all said oand done it would probably cost 2 times a Cummins installation. With the right amount of boost and IP, A 6BT will make enough torque and HP to break most drivetrains!
I know you could order a brand new Dodge or Ford 1 ton with a Cat, does anyone know what engine series this engine would be? My fathers friend just bought a new Dodge with a Cat engine from a dealership, he had it ordered that way. I know that a Cat conversion will be expensive and heavy but I'd really like to do it with a Cat since not everyone has one in a fullsize truck. I'm an equipment operator and all the equipment we have is Caterpiller and I really like the power and powerband of Cat engines even though it's low in RPM range.
I didn't know you could get a 1 ton with anything other than the current gas/diesel engines. I do know that you can get the bigger trucks with several different engine choices.
You can probably ask any dealer what the engine choices are. I think it's going to be similar to the 3116/3126 series though.
I don't think the 3208 available in anything but marine applications now. (new that is)
http://ohe.cat.com/cda/layout?m=85520&x=7 this shows one of the current medium on-highway engines that is similar to the Cummins and PS size/HP engines. This might be the one that you're talking about.

How much smaller is the 3156 CAT than the 3208? And how much is the general weight of the 3156? What kind of horsepower and torque numbers does the 3156 put out compaired to the Cummins 5.9L? Are there any reliability issuses with the 3156 and does it have any computer components?
I did a google search for a CAT 3156. I sure didn't find much info on it. Is it a 6cyl inline?
That might be a pretty rare engine. You might want to stick with engine models that are readily available on the used market.
