I just bought a 84 Ford F250 60k original miles and a 460 it was and is a plow truck the guy I bought it from was not very good on working on this thing so it has a lot of problems it has a original alternator which is way undersized for running a fischer Hd plow any ideas on how big the new alternator should be and where i could get one? Eventually i want to get roof lights, a amp and sub and also strobes and safety lighting.

On a 460 they usually came with a fairly large alternator. The size of the alternator is stamped on the outside ot the alternator housing. Ford used two different types of charging systems back then. The main difference was where the voltage regulator was mounted. If you have a silver box on the passenger fender you have an external voltage regulator. Otherwise you have an internally regulated alternator. The later one is more expensive of the two. You can upgraded either style alternator, but you may have to replace or upgrade the wiring. An alternative two these two alternators is a one wire alternator, these can be found with higher amperages and are very simple to wire-up. The only problem might be mounting it in the truck. Currently in my truck I am either running a 45 or 60 amp alt with an external regulator and a Yellow top Optima. I have not plowed much this season, but the battery is making a big difference.
mud the exernal regulator was not a option that year it came out around 89. they still used fords small case alt. max of 60 amps. i would check summit out you can get a powermaster 140 amp for 219.99 good deal and interanlly regualted.
Before I installed a bigger alternator, I would put in a second battery. Get a bracket and cables from the wrecking yard out of any ford with two batteries. For some reason battery cables are extremely cheap from wrecking yards. I bought $200 worth of cables for $10. No one buys them and they usually get crushed with the truck. The second battery will provide the reserve you need with the plow. The alternator is plenty big enough.
I do have two batteries in it but they are both two different types which are wrong and I will be replacing in the spring also. and yes the alt. can't keep up
ford390,
my truck came from the factory with an external voltage regulator. It was originally a 300 bare bones truck. I have a 460 parts truck with a external voltage regulator also. In my 86 F-150 with the 300, it had an internal voltage regulator.
