It shouldn't be too hard to find one. First though, you should tell everyone where you are. I would check with local engine rebuild/machine shops in your area.
What's wrong with yours? or is it missing? Really there's no discernable difference between any 8RT/8BA from 49 - 53, unless you really know where to look inside.
I have a '53 Mercury V8 239 for sale. It has the Ford head covers. It doesn't look any different than the Ford counterpart. The Merc flatheads have a bit more power and are more sought after. It's in good condition, but does need a minor rebuild. I have the complete gasket set to go along with it. Carburetor and original oil bath air cleaner come with it too.
PM me if you are interested. I'm in Northern CA (South Bay Area).
Like you, I want to put a stock engine inside my truck. It originally came with a 6 cyl 215 OHV engine. I have two of them waiting to be rebuilt. I just don't have any money. The sale of the Merc block would greatly help in funding the rebuild.
Where are the cracks specifically? From where to where? (like from a valve seat to a cylinder bore, bolt hole to a water jacket hole, etc) That's why I asked, many of these cracks are not fatal. You might just need a sleeve in one cylinder. It sounds like this shop might be unfamiliar with flatheads and their peculiarities. Do you have any pictures?
By the way, welding is not one of the preferred methods of repair on blocks. Pinning is most common.
