what can be done to improve the milage on the 5.4l? i've went to synthedic oil (diffs, engine and tranny) and a k&n filter.would headers help?chips?exhaust? i get 11 mpg now(81900 miles).
Do you have any other mods... perhaps larger/heavier tires? Anything sticking up off the truck? Big canopy? Brush guard? Options add weight which will affect your mileage. Are we talking about towing something? I get 10mpg with a 6000lb trailer. Like to drag race at stop lights? seriously... I know some people have poor mileage because they need to to see what the 0-60 time is at every light... That'll make your mileage tank pretty quick.
What exactly are you working on? 4x2, 4x4, SuperCab, SuperCrew? Gear ratio, tire size?
Driving downhill always helps mine
My 01 SuperCab OFFROAD 4x4 3.55 gears and 265/70-17 tires gets about 13mpg on average.
If you let it idle alot to warm up etc, that will kill the mileage too.
brushgaurd on front, topper, stock size tires.i've got 10-11mpg since it was new.i blew a plug(the infamouse #3) and since i'm stuck with it i was thinking of replaceing the heads(not with ford ones)and mabe bombing it up some.headers and exhaust, fuel chip.suggestions?
Let me know if you find any good way to boost it. I pretty much have just figure its the cost of having a superduty.
I have a 99 F250 SD SCab 4x2 and I usually get about 8 to 10mpg in town and 12-15 on the highway with out towing/hauling anything.
When towing my brothers travel trailer I usually get about 4 to 6mpg in town and 6 to 8 mpg on the highway, unless going downhill then the truck shows 14 to 16mpg until I level out.
I had completely forgot about the fact it could be a SuperDuty, or an Excursion for that matter. I see Jim's truck back at the start of the thread is an '02 F250.
The weight of that truck; It's larger, less aerodynamic front-end... what gears are you running... 3.73s, 4.10s, 4.30s... they'll be a factor.
These will definitely drag the truck's gas mileage down. You are going to be hard pressed to find a great improvement with these, or any trucks. Just remember, the more weight... figure on getting lower mileage.
DRIVE SLOWER!!!! START OFF SLOWER!!!!!! i went from 11.4 mpg to 13.2 mpg just by driving slower...u use the most gas when starting off really fast...it takes alot to get that big boat moving....try and keep the rpm under 2000 and you will see a dramatic change...and best of all it doesnt cost you 300 bucks to drive slower like it does to go out and but a cat back exhaust or a superchip....
I have a 2005 Ex w/ 5.4 & though it's hard to do it, being gentle with the "go" pedal will help. In my case, it really didn't make any sense to be agressive around town, so I started taking my time in stop-n-go traffic. On the interstate, I try to keep it btw 70-75. Drives my wife crazy!!!!
I also added a CAI by Outlaw which picked up the fuel averagea little (based on two runs on the same stretch of I-12; cruise set @ 70mph). Round trip total of 40 miles per run ,and I reset the meter once up to cruising speed at the beginning of each 40-mile run. The meter averaged 15.5-16.0 w/stock intake, and then 17-17.5 after the CAI. Both measurements taken around mid day with ambient air temps around 92F. Almost flat terrain w/ only a few feet of elevation change at best (it is South Louisiana!!). I still only get about 12 in town, but it does weigh 3 tons!
I have a 2003 F 150 SC FX4 w/ the 5.4. Bone stock 3.55LS 40000 miles. We went to Pennsylvania on vacation in June and got 18.8 on the turnpike running about 72 mph. Thought that was pretty good for a fullsize 4x4 truck. That is the best we have gotten with it. It averages about 14-15 with mixed driving.

IMHO...all the money spent on upgrades would be better to just buy the gas. The brushguard and topper do not help...as they add weight to an already heavy truck with a smallish engine.
It has been suggested by other FTE members, that adding a K&N or any other aftermarket filter actually causes the engine to use more gas. The reasoning behind it...is that the MAF and PCM see the increased air flow...and have to compensate with more fuel to keep that 14:1 or 12:1 mix going.
If possible, remove the K&N and go back to the stock setup. Clean your MAF sensor and disconnect the battery for one hour with the head lights on. This will erase your current PCM settings...and allow your truck to learn the new settings without the aftermarket filter. Keep your foot out of the pedal...and below posted speed limits by 5mph. You should see an increase by 2 or 3mpg.
Hope this helps some...and good luck.
