Thank you for the replies...sorry for the delay in checking in...holidays....
The tires are rotated every 5000 miles. After the 1st trip to the shop...they said it had to be done that often to prevent cupping. So every 5000 or less 100 or so....the truck is in the shop. Balancing the works is done each time.
I picked it up from the shop Friday (12/23/05)...due to the thumping noise again...this time they replaced the front tires per Ford...but the back tires (that have been on the front from previous rotations) are cupped so the thumping has quit in the front but now very noticeable in the back. If I'm not mistaken the tires are the Wrangler tires.
But the dealership said they couldn't do anything more, I had to talk to Ford. I called Ford...they said they were sorry there was nothing more they could do. Even with the original warranty (only have 30,089 on truck) and the extended warraty...there's nothing more they can do.
They told me to bring the truck back for the 5000 mile rotation and they would check the thread on the back tires to see if they qualified.
That's about the time I lost my self control...Tires are NOT covered by my extended warranty...and in 5000 miles my maufacturer's warranty will be close to expiring.
And the chance of having the oppotunity to get it in the shop on time is not looking good. Circumstances are leaning on the wrong side of the board for the future of free time.

If you have the Wranglers, just bite the bullet and get new tires. I know it sucks, but Ford will claim that tires are a "wear and tear" item and not help you. Those tires SUCK!
Cupped tires are a somewhat common occurance on the Sport Trac if you have the stock shock absorbers. The shock that seems to work the best with the Sport Trac suspension is the Monroe Reflex.
I have a 2004 and replaced the Goodyear RT/s tires and the shocks at 18,000. Rides like a different truck.
