The oil pickup tube is inside the engine so let's hope that isn't your problem. But, on older engines, it is not uncommon for the tube to vibrate loose, or as in one engine I owned, it can crack over time.
I would only work on this only once all other possiblities were eliminated. I would lean towards your cold weather, short trips as being the cause assuming you do not have a coolant leak.
You might send out the oil for analysis, which would tell you if you do have a coolant leak.
