Did I strike a nerve??? If you can't take the answers, don't ask the questions. And you are right, you can knit, braid, couchette or do whatever to your brake lines...I won't worry about it. Just honk your horn a lot when you are out driving that thing with no brakes so I can be sure to get the hell out of your way or maybe I will just be able to spot those zeppelin-like swollen brake lines sticking out from under your fenders from down the road and move to the side. Oh, and by the way, for what you will be paying for those custom braided brake lines, you could get a brand new set of OEM lines PLUS A NEW MASTER CYLINDER You know, those OEM brake lines that the millions of the rest of us manage to get by with every day without crashing.

And, BTW, please go back and re-read my other post...I didn't say I was troubleshooting your truck...I just told you how the brakes worked with the 7 year old rubber brake lines on MY PARTICULAR truck. ..like they didn't go to the floor when you stomped on them. If that bit of info is of no use to you, just ignore it....along with all the rest of my posts if you like.

I dont mind answers that are useful.... but answers like telling me to go back and talk to my "Cousin" like thats supposed to be a joke or something. The master cylinder is perfect, it makes pressure, nevermind, your not here, and you don't see what I'm talking about. Not making pressure is a totally different problem than what I'm having. If you haven't seen it before then you can't really understand what i'm saying, and I think that's your issue. I could go back and install factory brakes, but I don't want to, and that's MY choice. You could say that there's no reason to upgrade anything else on the vehicle either like tires, wheels, mufflers, carberators, air filters, anything.- after all there are millions of other vehicles driving just fine with factory parts....

and since your so concerned about me getting into an accident and hurting all the innocent people of the world I'll explain what it does again, a little differently. If you're doing 60 and slam on the brakes, it will stop in the same amount of distance as any other explorer- BUT if your only driving 5 mph and slam on the brakes, it doesn't stop in one or two feet like it should, it just keeps creeping along at about 2mph for a little bit, where as a normal vehicle will make you spill your drink onto the windshield. There are some other things too, but thats the most noticeable.

Anyone who just gets in and drive will never know theres a problem, but the accident we had was when we were already stopped, started to turn a corner, and then some lady coming the other way ran the red light and at FIVE miles per hour we couldnt stop until we went half the car length of the truck, instead of instantly like I wanted it to. In fact the brakes feel totally normal unless you step really hard on it, harder than the abs needs to function. And since the abs is not used at less than 5mph you can get away with putting more pressure on the pedal and still not lock up the tires.

but all this is just extra info, since all I want to accomplish is find after market braided lines for my vehicle, and now today I found a local truck speed shop that says they can still get them, or they have some old ones in stock from when they used to make em. My source may be found after all.

Braided Stainless Steel Brakes Lines

I realize this is an old post, but I came across it while I was searching and wanted to post updated info. The reason you couldn't find braidied brakes lines for an Explorer is that previously they were note DOT approved. Last year (2004) Classic Tube, http://www.classictube.com , began to offer the only DOT approved braided stainless steel brake lines called StopFlex. I ordered set for my '97 Explorer XLT and was completely satisfied.

When I originally placed the order the hose from the frame to the rear axle did not match, I called them and send a digital picture of the block attached to the rear axle, and within two days UPS was at my door with the correct piece. They can also provide you with any type of steel tube as well.

Thanks for the link joe! I have never heard of this company, but will be calling them tomorrow to check on this. The only other option I had found was to have them custom fabricated locally.

Can you tell me if you are 4wd or 2wd.

Mine is 4wd (or AWD if you want to get technical). They are actually a company that reproduced bent steel tube for classic cars, and last year I read an article in Car Craft magazine where they installed these on a late model Silverado. They're top quality and came with all necessary hardware including the L-shaped brackets and clips to mounth the hose/steel tube connection to the frame. If my mind serves me right, I believe the whole kit cost around $100 for all five hoses and hardware. They also make different kits if your truck is lowere or has a lift kit so the hoses are ajusted properly.

Like I said the only issue was the first supplied frame to rear axle hose had a banjo fitting instead of a T to connect to the hose for the left-rear and steel tune to the right rear. I took pictures and emailed them to the salesman I ordered from on Monday and had a complete assemly by Wednesday. After a year on the car they clean up with a wet rag and look brand new.
