my buddy has one like that the only thing the laptop does is decode the code and give you possible ways of fixing the problem ... i got one for 150.00 that came with a book that tells you the codes meaning then if i dont know how to fix it i come on here and ask

$350 is getting up into EEC Tuner or Tweecer range. It better be able to do more than read codes for that much money!

There is a product called AutoTap that sells for $200 that reads codes and also gives you a real-time display of what the engine sensors see. However it only works with OBD-II vehicles.

If you don't require the data logging and real-time capability, I would suggest sticking with a simple hand-held scanner and get the factory Engine/Emission Diagnosis manual for your vehicle.

A regular hand held scanner can be had for less than $100. Also check out: http://www.scangauge.com/

Go to www.ITPDiesel.com and look at the AutoEnginuity. It is a little device that plugs into your OBD II port under the dash on vehicles made from 1997 and up. I got the extended Ford package that allows me to monitor a bunch of stuff on my PowerStroke Diesel. I can data log high pressure oil, mass fuel demanded, oil temps, pretty much anything that has a sensor. You can then open up the data file and graph the results in Excel. Here's an example:
