Interesting. My shop 1981 shop repair manual doesn't mention a 3.8L v/6.
Maybe it was offered in 1980.

It has to be a 300. Ford didn't offer any other engine in a inline six in the 80's.
Unless sombody put it in later...
I suspect somebody put the distributor in 180 degrees off.... My guess.

81-F-150-Explorer, ditto on what you said.
Doesn't the 240-6 look the same as the 300-6?
Unless someone popped in a different engine, he "should" have a 300-6.
I think ramtoo should first try and re-install the distributor and fire it up.
If it's a no-go, then pop off the timing case cover and see what's going on inside.
Maybe the pistons are installed upside down. (kidding

Same identical block and look yes it does.
Even right down to the valve rod cover on the driver side, and distributor, placement.
The head was different. Don't know how much, or any other differences, but just looking at them at a glance, it would be hard to tell them apart.

I know its not just looking at the motor, but wasn't the biggest diff in the 240 and 300 just the heads and the stroke? Correct me if i'm wrong

Quite Correct, Olde Son, as the 300c.i.er is a Bored & Stroked 240c.i.er w/ a Larger Combustian Chamber Head!
