Gear ratios

Well the rear dana 60 on my 79 250 had a life ending day yesterday. Haven't pulled the cover yet but it's gotta be junk. I'm just going to do a axle swap, but can't decide to go with another dana 60, up to a 70, or put a sterling in so I don't have to pull the shafts to change the brakes.
Question is.... My current gears are 3.54's If I can't find a rear with 3.54's could I run 3.55's in the back, 3.54's up front, without tearing anything up? Thanks!

Yes, 3.55's and 3.54's would be an acceptable pair of axles and won't cause you any trouble. Personally, I'm a big fan of the D70 rear. Sterlings are a great axle too and pretty comparable in strength to the D70. Did you break an axle or did something with the ring gear or carrier blow up?

well...it's kinda my fault. My rear pinion seal has been seaping for the past few years, nothing bad and I only put 1000-3000 mi on a year...so I never took the time to change it. Needless to say the seal finally went out and i'd say it fried the bearings. Haven't pulled the cover to see what everything looks like yet, but it made a lot of clanging, banging, smoking.....
When it started whining I figued it was the trans, (been over-working it pulling loads on the goose) started doing some slow shifts etc. Shoulda known better

Don't feel so bad. We have a foriegn student living with us and his tranny was shifting funny and slipping. I told him he needed to have it flushed but when he got his oil changed and they told him it cost $100 for the flush he didn't want to shell out the money. A week later the tranny blew up and cost him $1000.

LOL Thats the funny part, with all the trucks I've built, other vehicles I do regular maintance/repairs on, my truck is always the "last" to get stuff done. Wasn't worring about the trans, got a rebuilt one on the shelf just incase. Never thought about the axle...hehe Even with all it's "abuse" I've never broken anything. But all it took was a casual trip to the tree field

Were are you located? I have a D60 3.5 rear axle I will sell real cheap and I even have a trac loc I can sell with it. If you just want the gears pulled and shipped, I can do that.
