I changed over to rotella 5-40 synthetic in my 2000 powerstroke. It was 40F this morning, so didn't get to test if it helped with cold start. Hard to believe, a week ago it was 20 below. I had Wally World change the oil. They charged $77, which I thought was pretty good since I figured it was going to cost me about $65 to do it myself. Getting to my question, they put 15 quarts in. I haven't changed my own oil for awhile, but I seem to recall it takes 14 quarts. I question them and they said it takes 1 quart for the filter. Is this right?
I just changed my oil yesterday with the Rotella T syn also. I put in just a little over 14 qts to get it to the full mark on the stick. I usually fill the filter before screwing it on and put in about 2 qts. After setting, the element will soak up much of the oil and it will be about 3" below the top when I screw it on so I would guess it actually holds 2 1/2 qts. It was 33* here this morning and I didn't plug it in so I could try it in colder wx. Fired right up without the lopeing I was having with the 15W40 dino. Great stuff!
Had a heck of a time finding the oil and ended up driving to a Wally-World in a neighboring town to get it. Apparently the local Wally-World here doen't know diesels exist. They said they could not even get it even tho the distribution center is only 15 miles away!
