I have had my truck now for 4 months (3100 miles) and I am just wondering if 8.8 MPG is normal for driving back and forth to work? The truck has the 4.30 rear and I travel up over a mountain on my way to work . When on the highway I get about 11.5 to 12 MPG. If this is normal fine.
Having owned a 04 6.0 PSD with numerous problems I am pleased as punch with this truck. The fact that I can go to work without the engine light coming on is a big plus.
It will get better as you get more miles on it. I think it gets to it's normal (peak?) mileage around 10,000 miles. I'm getting 10.7 with 4.30s and I rarely go on the highway. I don't have a mountain to cross either though.
I can finally chime in on the mileage issue. I just returned from my first trip w/o towing. I have a 04' F350 2wd CC SB 3.70 gear. 15.0 mpg from Cincy to Memphis, drovre 72 mph, that's 2000 rpm.
Vacationed this summer in Canada pulling a 7500 lb 5th whl. and got 10.5.
I drive only 7 mi. one way to work and get about 11 mpg doing this. All of these mpgs are better than my 97' Dodge 360 2wd cc.
Its normal in my book, with a 4.10 stick dually weighing about 6350#. I commute a mostly flat 10 miles on a secondary highway with about 8 intersections, so there can be a lot of stop and go. Mpg was 10.x before winter, but now 9.x. On the other hand, in MN we have a mandated 10% ethanol blend, so its not "real" gas.
That sounds about normal with that many miles, it took about 20k for my mileage to get any better. It was really hard to keep my foot out of the monster V10 now I just settle for the BSEG because I know what it will do.
Put a piece of electrical tape over the trip computer and just enjoy driving your truck!!! If you let yourself start paying to much attention to mileage you'll find yourself NEVER enjoying driving!
I think it is not that too far out of whack. I drive mixed highway and city. For winter I have keep hubs locked (I do not have ESOF) and I warm the truck up. I have noticed that for winter my millage wnet form 10.5 -11 to 9.5 to 10. I would think that you toss some mountains and the 4.30s (I have 4.10s) in the mix and you would loose a little mpgs. In the midwest the biggest hill I have is the ramp getting on the expressway!
I have found that not going for the BSEG does not save me that much. I do not race from light to light but I drive with a pretty heavy foot. I tried taking it reall easy and only picked uo about .5 mpgs.
Give credit where its due... The Dodge web site keeps a running poll at the top of there forum for what mileage everyone is getting. I'll admit, I have NO idea how to do this, much less keep it at the top of the forum. But wouldnt you guys agree it'd be GREAT to have for not only our V10 forum, but for ALL the engine forums?
They go so far as to ask for gear ratio, tire size, description of you truck along with your post... IT'S GREAT!
