OD light flashing

OD light flashing

What does it mean when the overdrive light on the shifter flashes on and off?

This happen to me right after I shifted into 4-hi then once I shifted back to 2-hi it was still flashing for about 20 seconds then stopped. I've since drove about 200 miles and it hasnt done it again.

Also another weird thing happen when im in 4-hi sometimes the LOW RANGE light comes on, though I know its not in low range. Or when shifting to 4hi to 2hi the 4x4hi light will stay illuminated?

I realize this is probably 2 different questions but if anybody could help me out I'd appreciate it.

The flashing OD light is an indication that the PCM has detected a transmission problem. You'll have to have the codes read to see what the computer thinks is wrong.

As for the 4WD issues, I'd recommend you start by pulling the electrical connector on the transfer case shift motor and make sure the contacts are clean & dry. There may be some dielectric grease in there- which is OK. Just make sure there's no grime or water.

The flashing light indicates your transmission has gone into 'limp home mode'. It goes into mechanical shifting. Normally the transmission PCM is bad and needs to be replaced. I've had this happen on 2 different Ford E4OD's. It;s a simple, but fairly expensive fix.

I have a 2001 SD 4X4 also. The 4hi light stayed on after switching back to 2hi. The problem was a bad servo motor control relay next to the engine compartment fuse block. The **** on the dash commands the GEM to energise the transfer case shift motor. It is a two wire motor. It uses the 2 relays to select the polarity and thus the direction to move the shift lever. There is a switch next to the motor to give feedback to the GEM. When the GEM thinks the shift has been made it turns on or off the light.

I also had a problem with the GEM getting wet after a rain storm due to a leak around the windshield after a botched replacement. It will cause all kinds of wierd problems.
