86' base ranger 2.3EFI 5spd. Put in new radiator now engine runs too cold! Temp. at stat housing only gets up to 170 degrees, needle on guage stays right at the bottom mark on the normal range. changed stat. no difference. could my fan clutch be doing this. how do I check fan clutch operation?
well, for one, if you spin up the engine so that it gets up to the proper operating temperature, you can usually notice the fan speed change every so often.. i was looking at that the other day on mine.
my 86 has the 2.3 efi also , but with a auto. trans. i just put a recon head, new water pump all belts and new 195 stat. it alway's run's cool even in summer. take's time to get the heat going . been that way since new. heat work's good when hot but engine temp stay's cool and gauge go's up to about 1/3 way up.off cool.worked well for 375,000 mile's and hopeing for another 375,000
2.3Ls run cold anyways. You know your temp gauge isn't really right? Mine sits between the C and NORMAL when it's at it's normal 200* or so operating temp.

Mines the same, I think the sending unit for the computer is in the front of the motor and the one for the Temp. gauge is closer to the fire wall. My temp gauge always reads cold, but I've checked it with a car chip and it seems to run at 200 or so degrees...
I checked temp. at stat. housing with engine running and after a long drive and with an infrared temp gun, temp. never gets over 170. also noticed my gas mileage dropped about 4-5 mpg so the computer sees it too if it's trying to raise eng temp. by increasing fuel mixture.
Strange, I'm finally getting my normal 23mpg intown again when the temp has dropped. At the beginning of the cold season I was sitting at 18-19mpg. (2.5L L4) Now I'm back up to 23mpg and I'm a very happy camper again.
23mpg very nice, not a leadfoot are ya? dag I'm not sure on the temp sender location, I have a 4.0L and mine's under the throttle body. I do believe your gauge sender is near the firewall and a royale pain to get to.
I'm thinking I'll have to get a new sender now. Sitting at Jack In The Box about an hour ago I look down and my gauge is almost halfway up, I figure oh no, it's gonna cook and flip my console open and turn the gauges on, and it's sitting right at 205* or so. Dang thing lol, scared me there for a second. With the fluctuations I think I'll just replace it anyways, fun little project and an excuse to pull and clean the throttle body.
[/end pointless rant]
Not anymore. I've forsaken my old driving habits for more economical ones. I rarely get over 60mph anymore. *sigh* Even on a 70mph interstate I grandpa it at about 65-67. An extra few minutes on every trip for and extra 2-3mpg? Hands down, I will drive slow, lol.

No way to drive like that on the freeways down here, if you're doing 65 you'll likely get runned down, over , and squished like a grape!!
