I thought I would toss this out to the fte members and see what there rigs do!
I have seen my oil light stay on for 7 to 8 sec after I have started it. I have 99 crew cab with 119000 miles. I'm running 15w40 amsoil .It will do this if it's all the time if the motor is hot or cold. The sweep gauge always reads towards the high side. I never have liked sweep gauges, numbers for me thank you.
I'm I over reacting or does this sound right? Thanks All.
As I understand it, the oil pressure sending unit on a PSD is more or less just a switch. At 7 psi (I think that's the right value) it "switches" the signal to the PCM. The PCM then "turns on" the gauge and the needle typically goes to the middle of the gauge. Kind of a all or nothing deal. If you have at least 7 psi of oil pressure, your needle gauge will move to wherever it normally goes. That why people call it a "glorified idiot light".
I'm not sure what it takes to trip the real oil idiot light. I'm assuming the engine oil levels are OK. Like Kwik said, you need a real mechcanical oil pressure gauge to really know what's going on with the oil pressure.
