There's a carrier break at 3.93 for the Dana 44. If you're changing ratios, and one set is below 3.93 and the other above, I believe you will have to change carriers as well.
OK the ones in the 86 are original 350's what ever is common for stock. The ones in the 79 are 411's i want to put them in the 86. Thanks for the info Scott
if you have the entire carrier for the 79 it will work in the 86 TTB unit, you will have to setup the gears with new bearings but they use the same ring and pinion, and the same carriers between those years but andym is correct in that there is a carrier break and the 4.11 gears will use a series 4 carrier which they should already be on in the 79 axle.
Will the ring and pinion in my 79 D44 Fit into a 86 D44 front end. Dont want to buy new gears unless i have too. Thanks scott
Need to consider carrier break as others have mentioned and whether it is a reverse rotation or not (you can tell by a high pinion on rev rotation axle as the gears will not interchange between a rev rotation and a standard one) Ford used a rev rotaion in front in some older model 4x4's

If I'm not mistaken the late 70's solid D44 and the TTB D44 were the same internials so there shouldn't be a problem.
and from his post hes got the complete '79 D44 so hes in the clear.
It is very easy to ID a rev rotaion unit. The difference is easy to see. I know Ford used them some, just not sure of the years and applications.
try from sometime in that late 60s through the end of them using D44 front ends including the entire time they used them in the TTB front ends.
Actually Dana first released the HP D44 in Jan 1965, and they can be found under a few rare 65 F100s, and were used from then on.

No actually it's not the same thing, the axle still rotates the same direction as any other axle but the proper way of stating it is reverse cut gears, this is done so that since the pinion is put above the center line of the axle, and the ring gear is put on teh other side of the pinion if you didnt' cut the gear in a rev pattern you would be running on the coast side which wouldn't be as strong.
