I may have worked a trade to get a 9" for my 56 (and a bunch of misc. parts). The guy has two sets of gears for it and will swap in whichever I want. It currently has 4.10s, but he has a set of 3.50s (???) as well.
What is everyone running in theirs and what engines/transmissions?
Mine will have a 5.0 SEFI/AOD.
Anyone have a specific recommendation? I know less than nothing about gears.
Thanks guys (and gals),
Brian
BTW: I am getting rid of the piece of junk ch**y thats in my way. (YEAH!!!!!)
I have (Actually had) 3.92s in my truck. I ran 2500 rpm at 70 mph. For engine/tranny my choice is 350/700-R4 (The overdrive gear in the AOD is nearly identical to the 700-R4). I will be running 4.11s next year though. I would suggest that you use the 3.50 gear and send me the 4.11s. Actually, since your truck will be a driver instead of a street/strip truck like mine, you will probably like the 3.50 gear better. Good luck.
I would think that the overdrive gear would keep your RPMs down plenty with the 4.10s. That way you could stick with the lower ratio (the 4.10s) and get a better jump off the line and better all-around acceleration.
I run a 3.50 posi and like it a lot, but I don't have the OD tranny. If I had the OD, I would rather have the 4.11 rear end for the reasons mentioned. But then, I like to street race.
On the other hand, if you are looking for GREAT hiway mileage, use the 3.50 with the OD. You'll still get off the line nice and blow off the ricers, but you'll get something over 25 mpg hiway.
This will not be for racing of any kind. Its a stock 5.0 SEFI (not H.O.), so it only has like 140 or 150 HP. Actual driving is the plan, so milage counts. It looks like the 3.50 is the way to go. Thanks everyone.
With the EFI engine I'd put in the 3.50, the EFI engine has better low end power production and efficiency than a carburated engine. I have a 3.70 in mine but my T56 6 speed has two overdrive gears:.62 and .50 so I still get GREAT milege: 28mpg measured traveling cross country at a "LITTLE" bit over the interstate speed limits. someone here can give you the exact figure for your tranny but most overdrives high gear is .62:1. There are formulas on the internet where you can plug in the tire circumfrence, the rear end ratio, desired cruising speed and calculate the engine RPM at that speed with a 1:1 final tranny ratio (standard high gear on non OD tranny). multiply that RPM by the OD ratio to get your RPM. If you want a strong accelleration and don't care about long high speed driving or lower gas milege then the 4.10 is a typical drag racing rear ratio.
I've got 4.10 or 4.11 in my 60 f-100 with original 223-6, and 3 on the tree. Maximum speed at WOT is 65 mph. I'd go with the 3.50 unless pulling stumps are in your future.
Donald here. In my 55' I have a 3.55 gear in my 8" (the little brother of the 9"). I get about 19 MPH with my setup (88' NON HO EFI 5.0 and AOD). My previous gear was a 3.40. I got better gas mileage with it, 22 mpg. What I am planning to do is run a different tire size to get me back up to the 22 MPG. I did notice by going to the 3.55 gear my truck takes hills better. You may recall going up the Cumberland Plateau near Crossville, TN around mile marker 295 when you went to get your 56'. Well my truck takes the incline pretty good without a lot of strain. For what you are planning to do with your 56', drive it like me, the 3.50 will be your best bet. Best wishes with whatever you decide.
