Guys, I have had my new 06 v-10 since Thanksgiving. The truck is awsome but I have a question. I ordered the truck and when it came in I took it for the test drive before taking it home. I put 30 miles on the test drive and did not notice the problem noise while driving it.
OK remember the noise you use to get when you put a baseball card and clothes pin in your bicycle spokes. That is what I have now. The service mgr and his tech rode the truck and said this is normal for the new v-10. His explaination was the air intake for this new engine. It happens on acceleration and deceleration. I thought someone slipped a little psd under the hood while I was sleeping.
This is the first experiance I have had with the new module engines. I have always owned older trucks with 460 carb engines. Can someone give me some insight on this. Is this the nature of the beast? Does not matter at what speed. Does not do it at idle. Does not seem to hinder the performance of the truck.
What about aftermarket exhaust systems for 06's?
Is it the same noise on acceleration as deceleration, or is it different in any way?
Could be an exhaust leak, but you would think the tech would realize that...well, maybe not.
It doesn't sound like a "normal" occurance. I've never heard the clacking noise. Maybe the tranny or torque convertor is loose? How hard do you have to stand on it (if any) to make the noise?
I've heard similar noises with brand new 5.4s. Seems to go away after some miles are put on. (My Dad's '00 made it for a little while) It does sound similar to what you describe but in a 'watery/liquidy' sort of way if that makes any sense...
Not having actualy heard it... Pinging from bad fuel / water in gas? Put some dry gas in it (make sure the dry gas doesnt have isopropyl alchohol! Its bad for injector seals)
next guess would be same as Big Orn's... Exhaust leak. Check torque on manifold bolts, and the bolts holding the manifolds to the Y pipe.
The noise grows with acceleration and slows with deceleration. Sounds like a little exhaust brake. The truck now has 1000 miles own it. Tonight my wife drove it and she said that the truck now has a rough idle so I guess we try the dealership again. Man I love this truck. I spec'ed the truck out but they forgot to place the steps and fog lights on it before delivery. The dealership put these items on the truck. Could they have do something when they where wiring the fog lamps? As for an exhaust leak it is not acting like what you normally have on a old v-8 but I will search this tomorrow Thanks guys and if you think of anything else please post. This has kind of got me depressed the first new truck that I have purchased and starts out like this. Ford all the way loyal to the Blue Oval I am sure we will figure it out
You will have to find the noiese yourself! It has been my experience that dealerships could care less about noise, performance or oil consumption issues. Take a 3 foot section of an old water hose and put one end to your ear or go buy a mechanics stethascope and just move it around on the engine while it is making the noise. When you find the general area where the noise is originating from just go back to the dealer and point!

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but the sound you hear during accel and decel, then the rough idle makes me think there's a loose plug. Have the dealer check that first and foremost.
I never had a noise like that and I think your dealer is wrong. Try another dealer. It has been my experience that most dealerships run their sales and service depts as two separate businesses and you can get just as good or better service from a dealer you did not buy from.
Good luck getting this resolved.
