Hi. I have been having a problem with the battery light coming on. It is a 2000 F150 with the 5.4 engine. It started out as the lights ( headlights dash lights and radio display) dimming when I was going up hill, then as soon as the tranny shifted gears the lights would come back to full power. Some one told me to check the ground wires cause it sounded like one of them was bad,I checked and they looked good (tight and clean). Now the problem has progressed to the lights still dimming and the battery light on the dash comes on. The volts gauge on the dash is still where it has always been. The belt is the original but it looks good. It does feel like it may be a little loose but I don't see anywhere to adjust, am I missing something? Any ideas of where to look or what to try?
Thanks
How many miles on the truck? You could have an alternator going out. Or maybe just the regulator. But that's the only thing that should be affected by the changing RPM's you've mentioned.
Put a volt meter on it( while its running) and you should be seeing 13 -14 volts. If not refer to what 92merc said. The volt meter on your dash is just a indicater, not a meter.
You need to replace your alt., and while you have the chance at change that belt too. The volt meter on your dash is nothing more than a dummy light rigged up to look like a guage, same with the oil and temp.
I found the problem today. The alt. was bad. Thanks to all who replied, it is nice to know that there are still people out there that don't mind taking the time to help others!
