engine to tranny mounting??

i have a 76 f100 custom. came with a 300 str.6.. want to swap in a 302 or maybe another v-8 havent quite made up my mind yet! my question is will the 3 speed tranny for the str.6.. mount up to v-8. or is it a different bolt pattern? im not sure what type of tranny is in there now,i cant get to the i.d plate. what kind of tranny was most used by for ford for these trucks in the 70s? any help is greatly appreciated from you guys!!! thanks
