Well i got some bad news yesterday when all of a suden my good old 300 started knocking.i think its in the top end some where. i was planing a rebuild soon but what would i be better of doing. a complete overhual on the 300 or put a crank in my 351w witch was just rebuilt but needs a crank still. i love the 300 but i think it will cost to much.
Either way you'll have to pull the engine. If it were mine, I'd probably tear down the 300 and see what went wrong. A similar problem happened to my brother's 300 after only 43000 miles on the rebuild. Turns out it was a cracked piston skirt,, and the damage to the cylinder was not extensive and the rebuild was not that expensive in his case. That might help you determine what you want to do.
Go for the 300c.ier, you'll be better off in the Long Run as it is Vitually Bullet Proof & the 351W is a Major Pain in the ****.
Mmm Hmm! Yep it's really your best bet. The Windsor is a good motor, but as the miles add up, the V8 is going to let you know when it's gettin tired. And they just don't run as long as the inline six. My 300 spun a rod bearing at 135k, it knocked to beat hell. As terrible as it sounded it still ran decent and had power to boot. I vote for an overhaul on the 300, you won't regret it.
be differnt and keep the six. who knows how many inline sixes have been pulled to be replaced with a v8 only to be swaped back when the v8 dies a hard death.
