King Pin Questions

I've just replaced the king pins on my 68 F100, and I noticed that my king pin rebuild kit didn't come with any shims. When trial-fitting the 76 disc brake spindles to the original 68 I-Beams, there's about .050" gap. In other words, I need some shims. If anybody has some extras from another job laying around, I'd be happy to pay for the postage for you to send them my way. Alternatively, if I could find something like a grade 8 washer that would fit, couldn't I just use that?

Also, regarding the new weight bearings that were sent with the kit, I'm assuming the machined side rides against the bottom of the I-beam while the "cup" that the bearing sits in should be mounted against the top part of the bottom king pin hole of the spindle. Is this correct? Does it matter where the shims are installed? I would assume they would be mounted between the top of the I-beam and the bottom of the top king pin hole of the spindle simply because there's no weight transferred from the I-beam to the spindle at that point.

Thanks for your help!

-Mark

King Pin Questions

Just curious. Do your wheels look like they "slant," especially when the steering wheel is turned hard over? I have a 1980 F350 that has had that look since I've owned it. I get normal tire wear, so don't really worry about it. I have the king pins too, and am wondering do I need to "fix" anything.

King Pin Questions

Man I hate King-pins,
When I did my '49 Chevy, I had an even bigger problem. The king pin bushings where to loose, and wouldn't stay in the spindle. I ended up JB-welding them in the spindle, witch I can't say is good pratice.
Now I have to face king-pins again, when I convert my '67 F100 to disc. I Hope the Ford repro's are better quality, and the Nylon bushings should be a little easier than the brass. If I can't get it right, then FORGET IT! I'm taking it to a machine shop and have brass one's put in the right way.

I've tried to block the Chevy out of my memory, but if I recall correctly, the shims went on top, and the load bearings where marked with "TOP" on the side that goes up.

P.S. What Brand of king-pin kit did you use, I'll be sure to get a different one. How did the rest of the prosses go, besides the shims?

I found my shims after all. They were stuck underneath the bottom flap of the box.

As for the rest of the job, it's going along just fine. I mean, I've had all the typical problems of stuck king pins, etc., but I have access to a machine shop, and I did all the work myself. I installed and honed the new brass bushings in the disc brake spindles, used the shop press and a torch to remove the original king pins, and I'm in the process of painting everything before I put it all back together. I removed the entire suspension to clean, paint, and replace all the bushings. Everything from the steering box down to the bearing nut caps that could possibly be replaced, has been. I can't wait to get it back on the road.

I understand how those shims could of got lost. Those boxes got a lot of hiding places. Let us know how truck stops when your done. Now that you got the newer brakes, it gives you a lot more options. Like all different types of brake pad mateials.

I'll have to hire out all my king-pin work, becuase I don't know any shops that will just let me use they're equipment.
