91 engine dies when put in drive
new to the forum here and honored to talk to such knowledgeable people. i have a 91 5 liter 3 speed/overdrive. the front seal in the tranny went out for the second time in 3 yrs. so i used lucas trans stop-leak. it worked for 5 or 6 months. it had gotten weak and leaked out a couple of weeks ago so i replaced it along with the wrong fluid type. (type f) I drove it to work for the next week and noticed the overdrive was not engaging. the next weekend i changed the tranny filter and used mercon fluid this time along with a thinner type of stop-leak. after driving a few miles the overdrive started working again. now the engine dies when i put it in drive. reverse is ok. if i hold the brake in and give it a little gas when i put it in drive it stays running. it just kills at idle speed when put in drive. have i damaged the torque converter or could it be a sensor? any advice would be helpful.

It sounds like maybe the torque converter is locked up. I'm not to experienced with transmissions. I believe there is a way to drain the t/c. You may need to make sure that the t/c drained its fluid when you replaced it the second time. Just some info I've picked up on this forum.
