Well looks like I may have to have my tranny looked at. It's a 4-speed manual and when I let off the accelerator when in 3rd gear she pops out on her own.
Can I remove the tranny by myself. I take it all I have to do after removing the drive-shaft, transfer case is to unbolt it from the bell housing once I've removed the aluminum top cover? Am I asking for trouble? I am mechanically inclined.
How big are you? Im 6'4" 330 lbs and I dont have a problem removing a NP435 on my own. I removed the one out of my 65 F250 after I got it apart from the 352. I put a grease rag on my chest, let it SLOWLY fall off of the jack onto my chest, and rolled it over onto the ground. I couldnt let it off the jack onto the ground any other way, I couldnt lift it with my arms while laying down. It weighs about 145 lbs.
A tip on removing the top cover to remove the shifter: I used a pair of channel locks; while pushing down hard on the cover with the channel locks, turn the cover counterclockwise, and it should pop right off. Might have to try a few times before it will budge. There is a spring underneath it.
Well I'm 220 at 5'11" and I made out okay with my rear diff. I would use a jack with a tranny adapter. But it is hard to work with something that heavy under a truck.
So once you unbolt it from the bell housing you can just slip it back? Will it go back in just as easy? Does the cover go on easy as well?
