I am looking for some help. I have a new 400 w/rv cam, Edelbrock Performer intake & 1406 carb. When the truck runs its best, it pings under load even with high octane gas. To eliminate the pinging I have rotated the dist. counterclockwise. The truck still runs good with almost zero pinging, but it is just not as quick & snappy like it was. I am running the stock distributor. I have read where some say about recurving the dist.. Is this what I need to do? If so, where do I learn how? Or should I consider an after market dist. like an MSD or HEI? I would like to have to rum premium. Any suggestions?
Are you just turning the distributor or are you using a timing light to properly set your timing? You can't just turn it, you need to set your timing proprerly, you could severely damage your engine if you don't do it right.
The truck has all of the emissions stuff including the EGR. I have set the initial timing at 12 degrees. I am not sure of the mechanical or total timing at this time. The truck runs great, but I get just a little ping on hard acceleration off idle. I am running premium fuel & would like to run 87 if possible. I was wondering if playing with the vacuum advance could help me get rid of the ping. I am currently reading up on recurving the dist. do you guys reccommend that? Thanks for all of the good info!
Recurving the dist ususally means you are going to be feeding the engine the mechanical advance faster which in your case will only make the pinging worse. The vacuum chamber could me a possible culprit. Where do you have the vacuum hose on the carb. There is a full vacuum and a partial vacuum port. Have you done anything else to the engine recently. Have you checked for things likd vacuum leaks that could be leaning out the mixture? Are you sure the plugs are the proper reach and heat range? All these things are easily checked and can be the cause.
to test the egr with engine running remove vaccume line from egr.apply vaccume to the egr.if idle drops and engine runs rough,it is working.if not then it is probably stuck.the egr valve directs exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber to cool down the cylinder, the cooler the cylinder the less pre detonation(pinging).i got rid of the entire system,i installed new edelbroc manifold (non egr)and 650 holly and a hei 50k distributor.(also have the rv cam)i run 87 when not towing my camper with no pinging.there was some slight ping when towing in the hot summer so i run 91 octane.i also improved fuel economy by changing this stuff.
400 e-brock 650, rv cam. Runs great but light ping at very light throttle under acceleration. I am running 92 octane. Would like to run 87. I am running the reccomended motorcraft plugs. Could I try hotter or colder plugs to eliminate the ping? I see where a lot of you are using Autolite 25 or 26. Any suggestions?
I still have the EGR. Dist. is not recurved. Some say that I should't need to if I have kept the EGR. Ping is so light that it is tolerable, but I'd like it to go away if at all possible.
