I just bought an '86 F350 with 6.9 that I rebuilt. I'm having trouble getting power to the glow plugs. I have power back to the GP control switch (located at the back of the intake) but not to the glow plugs. Is there a way to manually override this control switch? ie. momentary switch Thanks!
PS This engine runs super after the rebuild but it smokes terribly (black smoke). I'm pretty sure it could be a bad injector (on order), but could the IP gear be a tooth off on the cam gear? I would think the engine wouldn't run at all if this were so. The IP is rebuilt and I've ruled out just about every other factor. It's either the injector(s) or timing.
There is 2 wires coming from the power relay on the fenderwell right side of pickup. Check for power there. According to the schematic I'm looking at there is 2 fuseable links in wiring harness that are located between the power relay and the glow plugs. Found this schematic in haynes techbook 10330 pg 3-34 wish I could scan it to you.
There are many postings about the over ride button installation. When you installed the injection pump, was the front cover off so you could see the timing marks? If the timing is off, it will smoke a lot or if the fuel delivery in the injection pump is turned up, it will smoke.
