help with a weird nut

this is not specifically related to automotives but i guess mechanical parts. My family recently bought a rowing machine and one of the arms of the rower is mounted by a stud on the frame and then a capped nut is screwed on top. well the wrong arm was put on the wrong side of the frame and this capped nut freespins. What i mean is once it is tightened there is no way to unscrew it instead it just turns whatever direction you move it essentially free spinning. This nut is not stripped as the one on the other side does the exact same thing. I was just wondering if anyone has ever used these and if so is there any way to get them off. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Take a pair of plires and pop the plastic cap off, then unscrew the rest.

Sounds like one of those one-way clip on nuts. You see them used on the ends of axle rods for holding on things like bar-b-que grill wheels, tricycles, wagons, etc. They are one use only type affairs because you usually tear them up prying them off, but you can buy them cheaply at hardware stores.

no its an actual all metal nut just has one side to screw on with. Looks like a lug nut only a lot smaller.

I'm a bit confused here, are you talking about a nylock (steel nut with nylon insert for nut retention)?

no this is something ive never seen before its not a nylon nut. My father put this together so the nut was obviously tightened. I dont exactly how it was done but the nut will go in either direction left or right and it wont actually unscrew it just stays in the same spot. I think its meant not to come unloosened because its a part on the row machine that will be moving a lot and would probably come loose if it didnt have something like this. But how are you supposed to take it off if you need to. Ive never seen something like this but maybe the stud itself has an inner part being the threads that is actually moving and not the nut. I honestly dont see anything moving except the nut but who knows. Ill try and see if i can get a picture posted later today if that might help. Thanks again to all who have responded
