I was afraid this would happen... I went to order a pair of headers, they were flow techs. I could tell by their shpae they would not fit. The current headers on my truck that leak split around the motor mount. I returned them, but am clueless on which ones to order that will fit. I have called summits tech people, and a couple of companies. Summits people were clueless, and the companies say they their headers are designed to fit. But, so were the flow techs and they did not.
I've been recommended hedmans 89210's. Anyone out there have this problem? Got a part number for me?
Based on the part number you've been recommended I'd say you are going to run into the same problems that I did on my '77 F150 w/400 engine. The headman's fit the truck but the collectors pointed right at the transmission cross member and stopped about 2-3" from it. The first thing the muffler shop wanted to to was either cut/modify the cross member or start hacking on the headers. NOT! I don't have a good answer for you as far as what to get but I tell you that I got frustrated and bought a set of Sanderson headers, ceramic coated, and haven't had an issue with them since. Take a look at my gallery. Feel free to email me with questions if you want.
As an option. I used hedman fenderwell exit headers, and put thrush mufflers on right at the collectors. Then run a length of pipe down and exit in front of the rear wheelwells. I had a tight fit but did it without removing the inner fenders. And no body lift. It was on the cheap with a grand total of less than 200$
Don't know if you want to go that route but I second Havi's suggestion of fenderwell exit headers. I'm running L&L's and they make things so much easier to work on because you don't have the exhaust blocking the starter and other junk between the frame rails. Plus you can run a straight shot from the collectors meaning you can do all the work yourself and save $$ over taking it to an exhaust shop.
OK.. so let me see if I understand this.. I've never seen a close up of fenderwell exit headers, but do they go between frame and body? They go on outside of frame? So, by doing this, it would avoid having to split aorund the motor mount? I was planning on running them before the rear tires too. Anyone got good pics? This project may have to hold off. Can't afford the ehaders and a new exhuast.
they fit between the body(inner fender) and the frame. The headers are bent to go past the frame and then downward and then straight back. the directions I remember reading mentioned something about the plastic AC box needing to be trimmed, but I'm not %100 on that. Mine had no AC box to worry about.
L&L headers are sold through www.broncograveyard.com amont other sites. They offer both fenderwell exit and regular headers. L&L's are more pricey then Hedman and some of the other brands, personally I think they're worth the extra $$ and they have a lifetime warranty. I've only shopped for them for the 429/460 but I believe they build them for the 400 also. Mods that I'm aware of that you may have to make to run them is minor trimming of the inner fender, minor trimming of cab mounts (I cut 1/4" off the bottom of mine with an angle grinder and cutting wheel) and moving the brake line bracket that holds the lines to the master cylinder. The only negative I've ever seen is people with a larger than stock tire without much lift (on a 4x4) will sometimes have their tires touch at full turn. This can be solved by turning the steering stops out a bit. Here's how they look mounted on my truck:
And the rest of the exhaust that I built. Only thing I haven't added is the turndowns:

did you use part # 89360? where did you find those headers for less than $200?
77 1/2 to 79. 1/2 ton to 1 tons with 351m/400 not a highboy. however hedman makes them for highboys with fe's, but I'm looking up to see if they'refenderwell exit or not.
