Is there a way to tell the difference between 28 and 31 splines for the Ford 9 inch axles??????????

I think the only way is to count the splines it self.
One will have 28,the other will have 31.

28 and 31 splines

The information is hidden in the axle codes.

That's why most people pull an axle and just count them rather than try and search them out.Besides,actually Counting them Verifies the presence.

You're correct. That's the only way to tell by pulling the shafts out and counting the splines on each one.

1978 F-150 flareside. Primitive by todays standards but she was a jaw dropper back then.

simply pulling them out should be a good cue, visually the difference should be very apparent, especially when held side by side the 28 splines are necked down compared to the 31's
