Some punk came thru the neighbor hood a few months back and tried to break into the Big Red Truck ('68 Ranger, 360, c-6, ps, pb) but only managed to booger up the lock. The key won't go in so I can't lock/unlock it from the outside. Now, a few months later, the latch has quit engaging when you shut the door so I have to enter/exit thru the ps door after I lock the ds door from inside. If I get out on the ds, the door won't catch when I shut it.
How much work is going to be involved in fixing this? I'm figuring to replace the lock mechanism and the catch. Maybe it's all one assembly? Should I just get a door off a wreck and take out the guts? Can the lock be re-keyed to match my key?
Sometimes the locks and latches are on ebay. I think Dennis Carpenter has them. I bought a new set of door and ignition locks for my 67F100 and it wasnt that bad to install then. You have to pull the inner door panel but then you will see how to do it. The latch you should be able to find at a wrecking yard and you have to pull the inner door panel but it isnt that tough to do. If I remember correctly a #3 phillips and some PB blaster was about it. Adjusting it took longer than installing it. Hope this helps
DB, Sounds a little like two different problems to me. A busted cylinder shouldn't be causing the the latch not to engage.
Start out with a can of WD40 and get the latch working again. The lock is held in place with a C clip. Look inside the door, it's pretty simple. A newly keyed cylinder and the WD40 should have you back in bidness in an hours time.
Dan,
Here's a small photo showing the inside of the door. The red arrow points to the latch and the green to the C clamp holding in the locking mechanism.
