1993 F-150 TWO DOOR EXTENDED CAB. I have components for the front doors and coaxials for the rear pillars. Both sets of speakers have crossovers. I want to install these correctly the first time. Everything that I have read says do-not mount the crossovers inside the door. I hope that some of you can give me good advise based on your past experiences.Don't want no ''GHETTO''look. I want to put the crossovers where they will be hidden from view.Have read where some have mounted behind the kickpanels and others have installed under the dash.Seems to me that the under dash mount would be the way to go.I just want to get your opinions so I can make a informed decision as to where I need to mount them. I talked with the local installer and he would not give any free advise today because I told him that I had purchased my speakers on E-bay. Can't really blame him for that as he is running a buisiness and needs to show a profit, BUT I SAVED OVER THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS on E-bay and I beleive that I can do this install with your help.thanks in advance to all who reply
I've never liked the idea of installing crossovers in doors. While the likelihood of any problems isn't that great, it's just one of those things that can be done another way to eliminate ALL possibility. I had my crossovers installed behind the kick panels when I had an Orion component set because the module was pretty small. I upgraded to old school a/d/s 335px components and the crossovers are huge, so I have them mounted under the seat back of the rear seat. I have my seat raised about 3 inches which gives great access to the "shelf" under the seat back. I used a piece of plywood and covered it to match my carpet and installed my crossovers, a relay, some barrier strips, and even a small amplifier, which has since been removed. It's a pretty handy area. My truck is a '97 extended cab.
I mount the crossovers in the door all the time. Usually I try to mount them in a cavity beween the door panel itself and the vapor barrier on the door. Usually there is room behind the arm rest or something. If they do have to go inside the door I usually wrap them in a plastic bag and tape it up real good where the wires come out. If you can get them inside the vehicle that would be best but you then have to route the speaker input wire throught the door boot to the crossover then send the mid and high speaker wires back through the boot to the speaker. Some vehicles that can take some work.
I mounted the X-overs for my JL Audio comps in the doors because there just wasn't a convenient place to put them in the tight interior confines of my regular cab Ranger. I mounted them on the inner side of the outer door panel, right behind the speaker locations, using Velcro double sided tape. I draped a 1 square foot plastic bag over the X-overs so water escaping past the window seals won't drip on them. I was **** enough to use a highly heat-resistant biohazard bag, not just a generic plastic bag, because it would less likely deteriorate. It's been over two years since the install and I don't forsee any future problems (knock on wood).
I replaced the front speakers with Infinity Reference 6810cs and mounted the crossovers in the arm rest were the window buttons are, they fit nice and makes access easy.
