I recently purchased a 1995 5.8l f150 and when i put it into 4x4 high, the dash light comes on but i don't have 4 wheel drive. The hubs make a noise and when i come to a complete stop they click, but do not engauge. Also when i am driving in normal range, there is a low whining / humming noise whish gets louder when i let off the gas. CAN ANYONE ADVISE WHAT MIGHT BE WRONG.

Most likely, the auto hubs are shot, or overgreased. The latter can sometimes be remedied, but you're usually better off installing manual hubs as they're a lot more reliable.
Lift all 4 tires up in the air, start engine, put into gear and 4WD, and check if the front shafts are spinning. If they do, it's the hubs with 100% certainty.

I second the manual hub swap. Put the truck in 4x2 and jack one side up and then turn the front drive shaft by hand and you should be able to see the hub slipping and making noise.
