Paying Bills online...

I've been thinking about getting into this. What's involved? Can you pay any bill online or just certain ones?

It all depends on the companies that you have bills with. Most of them participate in online payments. The best thing for you to do is to get your bills together and one by one, try to find the company's website. You will be able to find out more on each website. You will also have to register with each one to pay online.

Mostly the bills I want to pay are for power, credit card, trash pickup, and medical bills. I already have my telephone, internet, and dish charged to my credit card. So, every person I pay online has to have a website and accept online payments? If that's the case I doubt if onliine banking is going to help me much...

GOing to each companies website is the slow and tedious way to do it. I use the online banking available thru my credit union. They have a list you can select from for your payees and then just add them to your own personal list. Has had most everyone I have had to find on it so far. Even paid my kids parking ticket from Oakland CA from here in MI thru our credit unions site.

Makes it real simple, keeps it all in one place and makes it easier to track and follow as oppossed to going to each accounts individual web pages. Takes me probably less than 20% of the amount of time it used to take me writing out checks!!

If you pay your bills 'online' then you would have to do it every month just like writing a check.

If you have your bills paid 'electronically' the companys you deal with will take payments automatically out of your checking account without you having to do anything but set it up. They will usually send you an email reminder just before payment is due or immediatly after payment has been made.

It's pretty conveinent especially if your bank offers online banking. You can check your balance anytime.

Hope this helps!

My bank offers a bill paying system online that you designate what you want to pay through them instead of writing a check for what I call "local" services...like power, water....etc.
I pay my truck payment online plus my phone bill but that's through the respective companies for both

Thumbs up

Like charliehorse said go with online banking thru your bank. One stop bill paying and my bank will pay bill to anyone I put an address and acct. no. on. Plus the next month you just go to the already established list of people you do business with and plug in the amount you want to pay. I've even stopped receiving cancelled checks because I can look them up online and make a copy if needed, but I can't remember the last time I needed a cancelled check for anything. I've saved a lot of postage for the last 3 years of on line banking.

About the only downside I can think of with all this computerized banking (direct-deposit, electronic bill pay, ATMs ect) is I don't go into the bank very often anymore...

My bank has some pretty cute tellers...

I pay my bills on line and love it. It is simple, easy, requires no stamps and I can pay anybody.

I guess it is a bit of that old -fashioned me or whatever, but I don't like authorizing any company to take auto-deductions/payments out of my account. Online is nothing at all like writing a check every month. Even with companies that offer the auto-payment, I prefer to keep it originating from one place and to have a bit more control over who can access my account. Maybe I'm just a bit paranoid about my account access being authorized all over the place.

If it is a set monthly amount, say like the gas bill (on budget plan with fixed amount monthly), I can just set it up online thru teh bank system as a recurring payment on a given date each month. For example, I have the credit card set-up as a certain minimum monthly amount, high enough that it will meet any minimal monthly payment, and have it scheduled so its always well before the due date. DOn't want to have a late payment and then get switched to paying 30% interest on the credit card. But I can still go in and make an additional payment whenever I want if I want to make a higher payment.

When I compared online bill paying to writing a check I simply meant that whether you sit down at your desk and write a check or you sit down at your computer and authorize payment you still are actively paying your bills each month.

That is a good system you have for paying your credit card. I still pay my credit card by check or online. But I have missed a couple of times...OUCH!

I use roboform for my bill paying, access is great, remembers passwords, and I can check on accounts everyday of the year. My bank has since offered on-line bill paying, just have all setup on robo with nice monthly planner.

Alot of the "monthly bills" that fluctuate, like gas & electric, they take the money out the day that is LAST due. I.E pay before Dec 20 = $19.98 Pay After Dec 21 = $22.95. That way there is never a late fee and it's is on the last date possible.

This is more of what I had in mind on online banking. I know my bank offers it and I just need to go by there and set it up...thanks.

I went by my bank today and signed up for online banking. They told me I can pay ANY company online. They don't have to have a website.
