Morning all: I just purchased a 99 Explorer with a 5.0 L for my 15 year old to start driving with. I thought I'd go through it and do some general maintenance. It has 63,000 on it and when it sets overnight and you start it up first thing in the morning it hammers like a diesel. Anything I can do to eleivate that shy of going into the motor?
There is a specific forum for Explorers, and a moderator will probably be along soon to transfer your post there. If it's a Ford, and even remotely resembles a truck, we've got a forum for it.
Is the hammering coming from the top end (i.e. lifters, valve train)? Are you living somewhere extremely cold?
It is from the top end. My guess is lifters hammering untill oil gets there. After a few seconde it quiets down.
I'm in Missouri we have both hot and cold. Right now we are in a cold streak! Overnight lows are 10, highs are 25-28.
Doesn't sound like something abnormal if it's cold and the engine quiets down quickly. You might add some friction modifier to the oil (Marvel Mystery oil, STP, or something similar), or even switch to a thinner oil (5W-30).
