One thing to think about: Is it better to pay now? Or pay later?
If you roll it into the price of the vehicle, and pay it off (or lease it) it might not seem so steep.
Or, you can save the money on the purchase price, and then have to pay it later.
In my case, my wife's 4.6L Cougar (the one in my sig) today cracked the coolant runner on the front of the intake and spewed coolant EVERYWHERE. I would have loved to have a 10 year extended warranty on it, so I wouldn't have to pay it out-of-pocket now, even if I had to pay $2K for the warranty and only $700 for the intake replacement.
I'll be doing it myself anyway, hopefully with a PI intake (MORE POWER!) if I can make it fit. However, for the average Joe, this would NOT have been fun.
If you can get the dealer to cut you a great deal on it, why not? The one guy I've known with a V10 never saw a garage in 3 years of owning it (dummy traded it off on a diesel without doing a test drive). From what I read here VERY few guys have needed dealer service on their trucks. Be carefull and dont let the dealer shmooze you into somthing you wont need though! After the experiences I had with Chevy service departments I'd never trust the work they do even if it is free! I'd much rather do it myself! My fancy, go fast Vortec engine knocked like it was a box full of rocks, FOUR dealers, and GM themselves told me. "Yep its under warranty, what you have is a known problem with these engines. In another few thousand miles it will seize upon you, but until it does your out of luck, we cant recall and repair ALL of these engines! We'd go bankrupt!"... HA!
One time I took the service guy out for a test drive and he said. "YEAH, that sounds BAD! You'll have to leave it with us." The next day he calls me and says "My manager told me I didnt hear that noise, or anything at all... You can come get your truck." ENJOY CHAPTER 11 BABY! I'm having a party the day they anounce bankruptsy!!! You see my negative view on warranty's though.
I voted, worth every penney. Three of my FORD vehicles purcased were slightly used, 10K mileage range. The vehicles were 97 F150, 2000 Explorer, and my current beast 01 F250 V10. All three vehicles have had the trannies replaced, the 97 was the only standard, none of the vehicles have seen towing or abusive driving. The 97 also had the Ford issue timing chain cover gasket leak repair job "twice". The Explorer or Exploder as I call it has also had a host of smaller repairs as well as the 250. In addition I also got the rental cars free of charge which at times kept me in a vehicle for a few weeks, all I paid was the $50 deductible.
I bought the Ford ESP warranty for $1000 each time, needless to say I got the much better end of the deal. When I buy my next Ford product, which will only be a Superduty, you can bet I will gamble again with the extended warranty.
It's a gamble. I've lost money on vehicles and have been more than thankful on others! Beed doing it less in recent years. The only reason I got it with this truck is because of the Lariat package and the 4x4. Lots of stuff that could have problems and it costs a lot to fix them. I will be using the truck a lot for towing too.
Nothing will make me happier than if I don't need to use the protection.
Also, the price is negotiable like everything else.
XK8 or XKR? Nah, $50K ain't enough for one of those Whatcha gonna get an X-series?
the wife wants an S-Type, I of course want the S-Type R, with the 390 hp 4.0 V8. It's the same architecture as the Lincoln LS of course, which is a fine automoble. Plus I'll keep my purchases in the fine family of Fords. The X-Type, based on the Contour, which is a Mondeo in Europe. Is also a very nice car, we loved our Contour. And the Mondeo is still one of the biggest sellers in Europe.
