With the back jacked up I can turn the rear driver's tire and the passenger rear turns the same way at the same time.Do I have posi or Ls or locked diff?

posi and LS ar ethe same thing. other than that, we hve no idea. what you need to do is put it in gear and while the rear wheels are spinning in the air, put a pole under one and lift up on it against the tire to try to stop it. if you can stop it, then its LS.

That sounds dangerous.

Read section 5 of this article:
http://www.drivetrain.com/Lockrightinst.html

It sounds like you have a locker. Easiest way to tell is to pull the diff cover.

well, take her to a mud hole, stop and start spinin, see what happens, or you could do it the unredneck way and pull the cover.

"posi" and limited slip are the same thing...sounds like you have a l/s....put it in gear with both tires jacked up(motor off) now try and spin one tire, if the other spins backwards freely its open, if itheres some resistance, then you have a l/s

its not dangerous... just get a 5 or 6 ft pipe and pry upwards against it... sometimes this wont work though it its a good posi. deff wont work on a locker. i wouldnt bother with pulling the cover off, thats too much effort and actually cost money to do.

I wondered if I had a traction aid in the diff of my truck so I jacked the truck up and spun the wheels sure enough spun backwards. I pulled the cover off any ways just to make sure but I'am glad I did pull the cover off the gear oil was yuuck it needed changing.

If you never changed the gear oil since you owned the truck buy a couple quarts of gear oil and a tube of silicone and change it. It will save you some headaches later down the road if you can spot a problem earlier and get it fixed instead of barelling down a freeway and the diff decides to blow.

If you had a 9" Ford I can see it being a pain in the azz to see if you had a open diff or not but a regular rear axle with a cover pull the 10-12 bolts and pry the cover off to see.

As for jacking the truck up and putting it in gear no way unless someone was in the cab of the truck ready to kill the engine.

exactly. OBVIOUSLY just do it on level ground, otherwise you deserve to have your truck run away on you cause your a tard. but if you use two jack stands its not going anywhere...

maybe if you jacked it up by the diff and left it in the air like that it would, WHICH IS DUMB. i dont know anyone whos ever done that before...
