This is a '88 F150 with an inline 6 and I am trying to figure out a separate problem. But what is that canaster for? Both tanks go to it, then it heads to the inline fuel pump. No power going to it, just some suction device with a reservoir. Help please!
Thanks, Justin
That is not the charcoal canister. The charcoal canister is in your engine compartment. You'll see a black box with tubes going to it and a small tube running to a solenoid that goes to your throttle body.
What you have found is your fuel filter. Maybe you should look in replacing the filter inside of it. It probably needs it. They are cheap for your truck.
ahhhh ok, I thought he was talking about under the hood (mechanical fuel pump but EFI's don't have that). Sorry about that, we've been working on the bog truck's so my mind is in 1,000 different places.
There is a filter inside of it, but it is not the fuel filter. It is the selector valve for the two fuel tanks and a small reservoir for the high pressure pump. It switches based on fuel pressure from the in-tank pumps, which is why there is no electrical connection to it.
Hey, that is what i thought it was. Mine has no filter in it though... I'll take care of that. But I did find a little rubber O ring at the bottom of the reservior just floating around. I dont know where that goes. Thanks for the info.

Has anyone ever test the Dual Function Reservoir using compressed air? I have read the test procedure from Ford, but, would like to hear from anyone who has performed the test.
Does anyone know this cannisters official name? Also, it seems that my 87 f150 has fuel pressue up to this but not after this. I checked the "in-line" fuel pump and it seems to be pumping fine but nothing is coming out. The filter in this canister is new so I know that it is not the problem. It seems like this cannister is stopping the fuel flow to the inline pump????
The Item being referred to is called the fuel tank selector valve. It controls both the fuel going to and back from the engine. yYou can test it with LOW pressure air no more than 10 psi. That's all the intank pumps make with the 3 fuel pump system. Also I believe the valves after '86 weren't designed with a filter and won't fit one(I tried). Good luck.
Thanks for the information. I went out to try some things and took this top off the fuel tank selector valve. I put it back on and now it seems to work however it is leaking from the around the top. Also, now that fuel seems to be flowing the truck started but is now idling at 2k RPM???
I believe it is called the fuel supply reservoir, they should have a filter, reason I know this, my 88 F350 was leaking fuel from it(draining both tanks), i went to a pick-a-part junkyard and tore one out of a similar truck, what this part does, if too much fuel goes to the engine it sends it back to the reservoir, the filter can only be changed by replacing the whole unit as far as Im aware, noone stocks them, reason being is the fuel runs to the fuel filter anyways, although I have still yet to find that on my truck it dosent look like I have one
